Epicteto
Epicteto nació en Hierápolis (actual Pamukkale, en Turquía) en torno al año 50. Desconocemos su nombre real pues, vendido como esclavo (Epicteto significa simplemente «comprado»), pasó a ser propiedad de un liberto de Nerón. Tras conseguir la libertad, ejerció como maestro de filosofía en Roma, hasta que tuvo que abandonar la urbe, quizá por la expulsión de los filósofos por Domiciano. Fundó su escuela en la ciudad provincial de Nicópolis, en el Epiro, donde impartió sus doctrinas orales, que apasionaron a las élites romanas, hasta su muerte allí mismo en torno a 135.
