Hijo de una familia burguesa, Verne (Nantes, 1828 - Amiens, 1905) tuvo una voluntad literaria inquebrantable. Pese a la obligación paterna de cursar leyes y a la presión familiar para que abandonase su vocación, el escritor pudo superar las coacciones y obstáculos y en 1862 obtiene su primer contrato con el editor Hetzel. Comienza entonces a publicar la serie Viajes extraordinarios, con títulos como Cinco semanas en globo, Viaje al centro de la Tierra, De la Tierra a la Luna, La vuelta al mundo en ochenta días, etc., obras con las que dio forma al nuevo género novelístico de la ciencia-ficción y que la crítica acogió con gran entusiasmo. Es considerado uno de los padres de la ciencia ficción, y en sus textos imaginó máquinas y tecnologías que tardaron muchos años en desarrollarse.
