"The Chengdu Plain Archaeological Survey (CPAS), was an international collaborative archaeological project that took place over the course of five field seasons starting in 2005 under the direction of Rowan Flad (Harvard), Pochan Chen (National Taiwan University), Gwen Bennett (Washington University, St. Louis / McGill), Jiang Zhanghua (Chengdu City Institute of Archaeology) and Li Shuicheng (Peking University). The survey involved a multi-faced archaeological investigation of site locations and landscape use in an area of approximately 350 km2 surrounding two Neolithic walled sites (ca. 26001700 BCE): Pi Xian Gucheng (30? 54 15 N, 103? 55 25 E) and Yufucun (30? 45 15 N, 103? 50 05 E). Using a combination of surface collection, systematic coring, geophysics and test pits, team members conducted five seasons of investigations and collected thousands of data points useful for synthesizing changing land use contemporaneous with the cultural changes that occurred in the region from the Neolithic, through the subsequent Bronze Age and into the period of the Qin and Han Empires. Settlement patterns attest to a diachronic process that eventually gave rise to the Sanxingdui polity in the second millennium BCE, and subsequent Bronze Age cultures that occupied the region at the time of Qin conquest in 316 BCE. This report brings together the data from this survey and synthetic discussions of the prehistory and environment of the region. The database provides the first comprehensive, systematic, large-scale regional survey of archaeological material in the Sichuan Basin of China.

The Greek ostraca in this edition are dated to the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. They were found during fourteen seasons (2005-2018) of the excavations of the joint Mission of the Universita degli Studi di Milano and IFAO under the direction of Prof. Claudio Gallazzi. There is a variety of texts, e.g., a new literary text with peculiar compound words, various school exercises, two groups of ostraca or archives (of Akousilaos and of Papontos), reports, private letters, accounts, receipts, lists, records, memoranda, tags, and some peculiar texts. One of the most important texts of this edition is the complete semi-annual balance sheet of an association. The texts contribute to the social and economic history of Tebtynis and the prosopography of the village. Because of the archaeological context (trench-section-layer), some conclusions can be drawn concerning the place of provenance of the ostraca. There are examples of randomly scattered refuse in open places, e.g., streets, alleys, or courtyards (outside the doors or gates of a house), deliberate refuse in middens and dumps for domestic use in various areas (open places, collapsed houses, etc.) within a neighborhood or outside the village space, and some ostraca were found in the rubbish tips on the south-eastern side of the temple of Soknebtynis.

This volume is the first in a four-part series presenting the final results of the Molyvoti, Thrace, Archaeological Project (MTAP), a Greek-American synergasia project in northern Greece. The project is centered on a site often referred to as "Ancient Stryme," which ancient sources identified as an emporion (trading post) and polis settled by Thasians. Focusing on the 2013-2015 field seasons, this volume offers a detailed presentation of the sites stratigraphy, material culture, and historical development. It proposes a revised chronology, including a 4th-century BCE reoccupation after destruction possibly associated with Philip of Macedon, and traces diachronic change through the Early Byzantine period. Among the projects notable discoveries is a complete Classical house--one of the few uncovered in Aegean Thrace--offering valuable insights into domestic architecture and material culture. An intensive urban survey sheds light on the citys 4th-century BCE fortifications and harbors, significantly enhancing our understanding of the scale and function of coastal settlements in the region. In the surrounding chora, the areas first geomorphological study examines landscape use and shifts in the ancient coastline. Contributions from more than 20 scholars present the sites architecture, stratigraphy, ceramics, small finds, and geographical data. Together, these studies illuminate Greek-Thracian interactions, patterns of settlement and trade, and environmental change from prehistory through the Early Byzantine era in this understudied region of the northern Aegean.

Investigation has been amplified by new technologies including computers, satellite imagery, mass spectrometry, and sequencers for ancient DNA. As information-rich findings are rapidly being deciphered, it is clear that the temporal depth and global breadth of archaeological discoveries are sufficiently rich to inform us regarding key contemporary issues--sustainability, inequality, governance, well-being, and heritage. Ernest Hooten once described archaeologists as "the senile playboys of science rooting in the rubbish heaps of antiquity." Although Hootens view of archaeology as an esoteric discipline remains intact in some quarters, clearly times have changed--and in this volume a diverse suite of archaeologists marshal their thoughts regarding the current state and future of the discipline.
