Alex Kerr es un escritor norteamericano, coleccionista de antigüedades y niponólogo. Llegó por primera vez a Japón siendo niño, y desde 1977 reside en el país, después de haber estudiado cultura y lenguas orientales en las universidades de Yale y Oxford. En Japón, Kerr ha desarrollado un ambicioso programa de conservación de las antigüedades, las tradiciones y la arquitectura de la etapa pre-Meiji (la Edad Media japonesa), y su proyecto más ambicioso y personal fue la restauración de una casa en el valle de Iya, en las afueras de Kioto, bautizada como Chiiori, actualmente convertida en un pequeño hotel rural. Es autor de seis libros: Japón perdido (1993-2015), editado por Alpha Decay en 2017, Dogs and Demons: the Fall of Modern Japan (2002), Living in Japan (2006), Bangkok Found: Reflections on the City (2010), El otro Kioto, publicado originalmente en 2016, y Japón oculto, editado en Alpha Decay en 2024.
