Denham Dobie has been brought up in Andorra by her father, a retired clergyman. On his death, she is snatched from this reclusive life and thrown into the social whirl of London by her sophisticated relatives. Denham, however, provides a candid response to the niceties of civilised behaviour. CREWE TRAIN is one of Macaulays wittiest satires. The reactions of Denham to the manners and modes of the highbrow circle in which she finds herself provide a devastating - and very funny - social commentary as well as a moving story.

Rose Macaulay (1881-1958) nació en Rugby, en el seno de una familia de intelectuales y clérigos anglicanos. Pasó la mayor parte de su infancia en Varazze, una pequeña ciudad costera de Italia. En 1894 regresó a Inglaterra, donde, después de estudiar historia moderna en Oxford, comenzó una carrera fulgurante como escritora y periodista. Viajera incansable, fue amiga de personajes como Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster, Vita Sackville-West, Ivy Compton-Burnett y W. H. Auden. Autora prolífica que abarcó todos los géneros, en 1918 publicó la distopía satírica Y todo eso. "Una comedia profética", que editorial minúscula incluyó en esta colección. En 1956 recibió el prestigioso James Tait Black Memorial Prize por "Las torres de Trebisonda", considerada su obra maestra y publicada también por editorial minúscula.
