Daniel Deronda, raised by Gentiles, discovers the truth about his heritage and seeks his Jewish roots, finding that Judaism--and, particularly, Zionism--gives meaning to his life. Daniel''s story intersects with that of the beautiful and spoiled Gwendolyn Harleth, who marries the jaded, depraved aristocrat Grandcourt and lives to repent her bad judgment. As the novel''s moral center, Daniel provides a role model for Gwendolyn and, eventually, becomes a revered leader of the Zionist movement. DANIEL DERONDA, first published in 1876, is remarkable for its sympathetic and closely observed portrait of its Jewish characters--unusual in the Victorian period, when Jews were routinely vilified or caricatured in fiction. But it is also a deeply intelligent novel that explores two vastly different worlds with subtle acuity, whether the plot takes it to the ascetic study of a Jewish scholar or to the casinos where Gwendolyn routinely gambles away her money. The main characters'' two remarkable journeys--Daniel''s back to the religion of his people, and Gwendolyn''s from selfishness to wisdom--are parallel quests toward what is always Eliot''s true subject: the progress of the mind and the heart toward self-discovery, a preoccupation that was more characteristic of modernist fiction than of the novels being written in the mid-19th century.

Mary Ann Evans, George Eliot para la historia de la literatura, nació en 1819 en Chilvers Coton (Warwickshire), hija de un agente inmobiliario. A los ocho años se la consideraba ya «fuera de lo normal» por su peculiar inteligencia y brillantez; a los diecisiete confesaba su agnosticismo y su padre, que le había dado una rigurosa educación religiosa, la echó de casa. Subdirectora de la Westminster Review, el foro intelectual progresista más importante de su tiempo, fue animada a dedicarse a la literatura por el crítico George Henry Lewes, que llegaría a ser su compañero prácticamente para el resto de su vida: decidieron vivir juntos a pesar de que él estaba casado.

Las primeras novelas de George Eliot, situadas en su Warwickshire natal, tienen cierto aire idílico: Escenas de la vida parroquial (1858), Adam Bede (1859), El molino del Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), aunque algunos relatos y novelas cortas como El velo alzado (1859) y El hermano Jacob (1860) anunciaron ya a una escritora de gran ambición y originalidad. Con la novela histórica Romola (1863) inició su etapa de madurez, a la que pertenecen Felix Holt (1866), Middlemarch (1871-72) y Daniel Deronda (1876). A la muerte de Lewes en 1878, se ocupó de concluir la obra más importante de éste, Problems of Life and Mind. En 1880 se casó con el agente de bolsa John Walter Cross, pero en diciembre de ese mismo año falleció en Londres.
