Celeste Ng creció en Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, y en Shaker Heights, Ohio, en una familia de científicos. Fue alumna de la Universidad de Harvard y obtuvo una beca de la Universidad de Michigan donde ganó el Premio Hopwood. Ha publicado su ficción y sus ensayos en One Story, TriQuarterly, Bellevue Literary Review, la Kenyon Review Online, entre otras publicaciones, y ganó en su día el Premio Pushcart. Recientemente ha sido ganadora del Massachusetts Book Award, el Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature, el ALAs Alex Award, y del Medici Book Club Prize, y fue finalista de otros muchos premios incluido el Ohioana Award, el John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger Award, y el VCU Cabell First Novelist Award. La autora fue seleccionada en 2014 por el New Yorker como una de las mujeres escritoras más importantes del año.
