Jane Austen's best-loved novel is a memorable story about the inaccuracy of first impressions, about the power of reason, and above all about the strange dynamics of human relationships and emotions. Here, where Hugh Thomson's delightful period illustrations were originally black-and-white, they have been sensitively coloured by Barbara Frith, one of Britain's most accomplished colourists. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) was the finest exponent of period illustration in what is sometimes known as the 'powder and patch' school.

Jane Austen (Steventon, 1775 - Winchester, 1817) es uno de los nombres más importantes de la literatura británica moderna. Séptima de ocho hermanos, se educó casi siempre en la rectoría en la que nació, bajo la tutela de su padre, un párroco rural que le inculcó su pasión por los libros. En 1787, empezó a escribir textos por diversión y para el entretenimiento de su familia. Entre los veinte y los veinticinco años escribió las primeras versiones de sus novelas Sentido y sensibilidad, Orgullo y prejuicio y La abadía de Northanger. Tras el fallecimiento de su padre, tuvo que mudarse con su familia a Southampton en 1806 y más tarde a Chawton.Allí revisó sus novelas Sentido y sensibilidad y Orgullo y prejuicio, que fueron publicadas anónimamente en 1811 y 1813, y también escribió sus novelas Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816) y Persuasión (1818).
