Nacida en el seno de una familia victoriana de clase media alta, Edith Nesbit quedó muy pronto huérfana de padre. En 1880, se casó con Hubert Bland, con el que tuvo cinco hijos. La enfermedad de este y la estafa de un socio llevaron al matrimonio Bland a una situación económica desesperada, lo cual determinó a la autora a escribir para sacar a la familia adelante. Escribió historias de terror, obras de teatro, reseñas, etc. Fue miembro fundador de la sociedad Fabiana (movimiento socialista británico). Tras la muerte de su marido, pasó un año en blanco y grandes dificultades económicas. En 1917, vuelve a contraer matrimonio y retoma la escritura. Es conocida fundamentalmente por sus obras para niños, con un estilo innovador que inspiró a autores como C. S. Lewis o J. K. Rowling.
