Robert Swindells nació en 1939 en Bradford (Inglaterra). Ha trabajado como profesor, pero desde 1980 se dedica únicamente a escribir. Con el fin de documentarse para la creación de esta novela -galardonada con el importante «Premio Carnegie»- vivió como un vagabundo durante algunas noches en las calles de Londres.
