Jim Thompson (Oklahoma, 1906 - Califòrnia, 1977). El conjunt de la seva obra és una salvatge demolició del somni americà. La seva vida dona per a una novel·la. El seu pare, un xèrif corrupte fugit a Mèxic. La seva infantesa, itinerant i pobra. De jove, un rodamon. Coneix Woody Guthrie, que matava feixistes amb la guitarra. Ell i les feines miserables li proporcionen una aguda consciència de classe. No és fins el 1942 que publica la primera novel·la. La primera obra mestra —The Killer Inside Me—, l’escriu deu anys més tard. Kubrick es fixa en ell com a guionista i inicien una turbulenta relació que ha donat per a la història The Killing i Paths of Glory. Durant la dècada de 1950 va escriure una dotzena dels seus títols més celebrats, entre els quals hi ha The Getaway, que La Segona Perifèria publicarà pròximament. 1280 hab. és una de les novel·les més grans que ha donat el gènere negre. Thomson va morir oblidat per tothom.
