The story, based in Suffolk, follows the reformed sniper in search of peace and quiet and DCI Cartwright in search of Brian. The complex plot unfolds when a local fisherman trawls up the golf bag. For all that Brian finds what hes looking he becomes involved in kidnap and murder. Then when it seems that all will end happily ever after, justice is served - or is it? Although this is a story in its own right it is also the final novel in the trilogy which begins after WWII inEasier Than It Seemsand develops through the exploits of a black marketeering Scotsman who becomes a gun runner for the IRA inRetribution.It has nothing to do with golf!
After a mysterious disappearance on the canal, Jock turns up in Belfast gun-running for the IRA during the troubles. He hatches a more lucrative scheme with a Palestinian and the story follows the conspiracy to divert weapons to the Black September Organisation. Helen, Jocks erstwhile partner in a previous black market scam, is reunited with her son after a prison sentence and she fears for her safety while Jock is at large. We follow the arms shipment by road, Grand Union Canal and sea to a destination on the Suffolk coast where Jock is ultimately served his final retribution.
A chance encounter with a van leads DCI Cartwright into a convoluted case riddled with coincidences. The van isen routefor London but the cargo, smuggled from Amsterdam and landed by boat on the River Deben, is not quite what the courier had been expecting. The discovery of a kidnapped and assaulted Dutch student is only the beginning and Cartwright becomes suspicious of the activities of a cut-price enterprise and a dodgy antiques business in Bethnal Green where a syndicate of small-time cockney villains is looking to develop the potential for import and export of stolen jewellery and antiques and an increasing demand for cannabis.
Ken and Jocks war is focused on a black-market enterprise. The story develops through a faltering relationship between Ken and Helen, a land-army girl, and an unwanted child. Jock takes on Helen as his partner in the racket which moves to a narrowboat plying the Leicester Line of Grand Union Canal. The plot involves murder and mystery with Helen eventually claiming all the illicit earnings and reconciliation with her son.
