Alegrías y penas en Garveloch sitúa la historia en las islas de Escocia, a través de los mismos personajes aparecidos en su novela. Ella de Garveloch trata la cuestión del principio de la población, uno de los temas estudiados ampliamente por los economistas clasicos. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) fue una escritora britanica que alcanzo la fama con la coleccion de 25 novelas economicas que se editaron en Gran Bretraña entre 1832 y 1834 con el titulo Illustrations of Political Economy, destinadas a dar aconocer, los principios economicos basicos, mediante historias sencillas de facil comprension al alcance de toda la poblacion. El exito de las novelas fue sonado e intereso a politicos, empresarios, profesionales, obreros y en general a un amplio espectro de la clase media, y atrajo tanto a los lectores masculinos como a las mujeres britanicas.

Para ello la autora narra una bonita historia que describe la vida de un pueblecito ingles.Demerara publicado en 1832 se centra en la esclavitud oponiendose a ella, considerandola improductiva desde un punto de vista economico y humano. Para ello cuenta las andanzas de los hermanos Alfred y Mary Bruce en Demerara, una region de America del Sur, tras haber sido educados en Inglaterra durante 14 años.

Although he is immediately attracted to Margaret, Hope is ultimately persuaded to marry the beautiful Hester and becomes trapped in an unhappy marriage. His troubles are compounded when a malicious village gossip accuses Hope of grave-robbing, threatening his career. A powerful exploration of the nature of ignorance and prejudice, Deerbrook also may be regarded as one of the first Victorian novels of English domestic life.

Harriet Martineau, Maria H. FrawleyWriter and journalist Martineau (1802-76), first writing under the pseudonym of "An Invalid," penned this autobiographical account of the Victorian culture of "invalidism." She describes her mental and physical travails in the "sick-room," and reflects on medical, spiritual, psychological, and other aspects of the experience. Editor Frawley (English, George Washington U.) offers an introduction that explores the literary and social implications Martineau's mixed-genre narrative. Also included are a number of Martineau's other writings on medicine, an exchange of letters with Florence Nightingale, excerpts of other pieces of sickroom literature, and reviews.
