El renombrado diseñador de moda Issey Miyake estudió diseño gráfico en la Tama Art University de Tokio, graduándose en 1964. En 1970, fundó en Tokio el Miyake Design Studio. A fines de los años 1980, comenzó a experimentar con nuevos métodos de plisado que permitieran flexibilidad de movimientos al usuario, así como unos cuidados y una producción sencillos. Esto resultó eventualmente en una nueva técnica llamada plisado de prendas, y en 1993 fue lanzada la línea Pleats Please.
