Las actividades de tiempo libre han adquirido una importancia siginificativa en el panorama general de la educación. Abandonando los planteamientos iniciales, asistenciales o muy minoritarios, han evolucionado con la demanda de incidir en colectivos más amplios de población. La educación en el tiempo libre nación en el marco del voluntariado; en estos momentos, continúa en él, pero con la coexistencia con sectores más profesionalizados, y como actividad lucrativa. Es decir, se ha convertido en un campo con mucha más complejidad que la de hace unas décadas.
