Shantis husband is a fighter pilot missing in Burma. For the past three years she has travelled the country in search of him. In every military hospital she visits she hears a new story, and every time she passes through Leharia she tells one to Shiv. Through stories within stories Chandra tells a spiralling tale of loss, and of two wounded people becoming something new.

Vikram Chandra (Nueva Delhi, 1961) realizó sus estudios universitarios en el Mayo College de Ajmer, en Rajastán, y estudió escritura creativa en el Pomoma College de Claremont, cerca de Los Ángeles. Divide su tiempo entre Mumbai y Berkeley, California, donde enseña escritura creativa en la universidad. Tierra roja y lluvia torrencial, su primera novela, alcanzó un notable éxito de crítica en Inglaterra, Estados Unidos y la India, y mereció el premio Commonwealth Writers en 1996 a la mejor ópera prima, así como el David Higham en 1995 a la mejor obra de ficción en Reino Unido. En 1997, con su segundo libro, una colección de relatos titulada Amor y añoranza en Bombay, consiguió de nuevo el premio Commonwealth Writers. Juegos sagrados, su última novela, estuvo en las listas de los mejores libros del año para The Independent, Financial Times, Booksense, Time, Guardian, Bussiness Standard, Man's World y The Financial Express. Fue nominado al National Book Critics Circle Award y recibió los galardones Hutch Crossword Award for English Fiction en 2006 y Salon Book Award en 2007.
