Escrito por Tommaso Campanella


Tommaso Campanella (Stilo, Italia, 1568-París, 1639). Filósofo italiano. Ingresó muy joven en la orden de los dominicos y estudió matemáticas, filosofía y derecho. En 1599 organizó una revuelta campesina que perseguía la instauración de una república teocrática, por la que sufrió diversos procesos eclesiásticos y una condena a cadena perpetua, de la que finalmente fue liberado en 1634 por Urbano VIII. Durante los años de condena escribió lo esencial de su obra: Metaphysica, Monarchia Messiae, Atheismus triomphatus y Philosophia rationalis, y preparó la obra más representativa de su pensamiento, La ciudad del sol (1623). Esta última, estrechamente vinculada al movimiento de la Contrarreforma, proyecta un sistema sociopolítico centrado en la idea de una religión natural, es decir, de una religión fundamentada filosóficamente.
