Escritora feminista, profesora, editora y comentarista, Gay trabaja como profesora asociada de Inglés en la Universidad Purdue, escribe regularmente artículos para el New York Times, es fundadora de Tiny Hardcore Press, editora de ensayos para The Rumpus, y coeditora en PANK, organización sin ánimo de lucro de colectivos de artes literarias.
