British artist Lucian Freud is widely considered the most important figurative painter working today. Master portraitist and specialist in nudes, Freud uses impasto to create depth and intensity while restraining his color palate to mostly muted hues. His portraits may be physically unflattering to their subjects, but they are honest, frank, and unapologetic. "I paint people," Freud has said, "not because of what they are like, not exactly in spite of what they are like, but how they happen to be."

Sebastian Smee es crítico de arte del Boston Globe desde 2008. Obtuvo el Premio Pulitzer en 2011, tras años de quedar finalista. Empezó a trabajar en el Globe desde Sidney, donde había sido crítico de arte para The Australian. Antes de eso, vivió en Reino Unido, donde colaboraba con medios como The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Art Newspaper, The Independent, Prospect y The Spectator. Ha sido coautor de cinco libros sobre Lucian Freud. Da clases de escritura de no ficción en el Wellesley College.
