Arthur Charles Clarke nació en 1917, en Minehead, Somerset, Inglaterra. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial entró en el King's College, Londres, en 1948, acabando con honores sus estudios en física y matemáticas. Entre 1946 y 1947 y entre 1950 y 1953 fue presidente de la Sociedad de Interplanetaria Británica. Arthur C. Clarke escribió el guión de 2001: UNA ODISEA ESPACIAL (1968) junto a Stanley Kubrick. La novelización fue escrita basándose en el guión. En los 60 Arthur C. Clarke dedica sus energías creativas a obras ajenas al género, y a la divulgación científica. En 1980 gana el premio Hugo de novela. Clarke siempre escribe con lucidez, a veces en un tono frío, frecuentemente con gracia, siendo un agudo evocador que ha producido algunas de los imágenes más memorables en ciencia-ficción.
