A young boy has fled his home. Crouched in his hiding place he hears the shouts of the men hunting him. When the search party has passed, what lies before him is an infinite, arid plain, one he must cross in order to escape those from whom he's fleeing. One night he crosses paths with an old goatherd and from that moment nothing will ever be the same for either of them. Out in the Open tells the story of a boy in a drought-stricken country ruled by violence. A closed world where names and dates don't matter, where morals have drained away with the water. In this landscape the boy, not yet a lost cause, has the chance to learn the painful basics of judgement, or to live out forever the violence with which he grew up.

Jesús Carrasco nació en Olivenza (Badajoz) en 1972. Su primera novela, Intemperie (Seix Barral, 2013), lo consagró como uno de los debuts más deslumbrantes del panorama literario internacional y fue galardonada con el Premio Libro del Año otorgado por el Gremio de Libreros de Madrid, el de Cultura, Arte y Literatura de la Fundación de Estudios Rurales, el English PEN Award y el Prix Ulysse a la Mejor Primera Novela. Quedó finalista del Premio de Literatura Europea en Holanda y del Prix Méditerranée Étranger en Francia. Elegida como Libro del Año por El País en 2013 y seleccionada por The Independent como una de las mejores novelas traducidas de 2014 en Reino Unido, Intemperie ha sido publicada en veintiocho lenguas y ha sido adaptada al cine por Benito Zambrano. Su segunda novela, La tierra que pisamos (Seix Barral, 2016), fue galardonada con el Premio de Literatura de la Unión Europea. Su siguiente libro, Llévame a casa (Seix Barral, 2021), ganó el XVII Premio Dulce Chacón de Narrativa Española y el Premio Casino de Santiago. Elogio de las manos (Seix Barral, 2024) es su última novela, ganadora del Premio Biblioteca Breve 2024.
