Alexander McCall Smith nació en Zimbaue y estudió tanto allí como en Escocia. Durante muchos años fue profesor en la Universidad de Edimburgo, y como tal regresó a África para trabajar en Botsuana y en Suazilandia. En 2005 abandonó su carrera académica para dedicarse a escribir. Ha publicado más de sesenta libros, entre los que destaca la serie de La Primera Agencia de Mujeres Detectives, en la que su protagonista, Mma Ramotswe, resuelve divertidos casos para delicia de millones de lectores en todo el mundo. Alexander McCall Smith está casado y tiene dos hijas.
