The Faerie Queene (1590, 1596) by Edmund Spenser is one of the most significant and ambitious works of English literature from the late 16th century. A long, allegorical epic poem written in ottava rima (an eight-line stanza), The Faerie Queene was intended by Spenser to celebrate the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and to promote the values of chivalry, virtue, and moral integrity. With its intricate blend of myth, history, and medieval romance, the poem is a grandiose meditation on the nature of good and evil, individual and societal duty, and the role of heroism in both personal and national contexts.The poem’s structure is both complex and symbolic. The Faerie Queene consists of six books (with a seventh book planned but unfinished), each focusing on one of the virtues essential to the ideal knight. These virtues—Holiness, Temperance, Chastity, Friendship, Justice, and Courtesy—are embodied in individual knights who embark on various quests to overcome obstacles and confront forces of evil. In addition to the central theme of virtue, the work is rich in allegory, mythology, and religious symbolism, presenting a vision of the struggle between good and evil, and the ideal of Christian morality.The Faerie Queene herself is an allegorical figure representing Elizabeth I, depicted as a wise and just ruler who governs a mythical kingdom. She is not the main protagonist of the work but serves as the central figure around whom the various knights and their quests revolve. The knights of the poem—such as Redcrosse Knight, Sir Guyon, Britomart, and others—are the embodiments of virtue in their individual quests to vanquish evil and defend their values.
