Hija de un farmacéutico y una empresaria, Ann Petry (1908-1997) formaba parte de una de las dos únicas familias negras de Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Se dedicó durante un tiempo al negocio familiar antes de mudarse a Harlem con su marido, decidida a cumplir su sueño de ser escritora.
