Nacido en Ghana en 1952, William Boyd pasó gran parte de su infancia en el oeste de África. Es autor de catorce novelas, entre las que destacan Un buen hombre en África, Como nieve al sol, Barras y estrellas, Las nuevas confesiones, Playa de Brazzaville, La tarde azul, Armadillo, Las aventuras de un hombre cualquiera, Sin respiro y Solo, protagonizada por James Bond (todas ellas publicadas por Alfaguara). También ha escrito libros de relatos, un ensayo, una biografía, y guiones para cine y televisión. Ha sido galardonado, entre otros, con los premios Whitbread First Novel; Somerset Maugham; John Llewellyn Rhys; James Tait Black Memorial; Jean Monnet; Costa Novel of the Year, y el Yorkshire Post Novel of the Year. Es miembro de la Real Sociedad de Literatura británica y Oficial de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras francesa. En 2005 fue nombrado Caballero del Imperio Británico. Hoy en día divide su tiempo entre el suroeste de Francia y el barrio londinense de Chelsea.
