(Cheetham Hill, Inglaterra, 1849 - Plandome, Estados Unidos, 1924). Se quedó huérfana de padre cuando tenía apenas cinco años y, con su madre y sus cuatro hermanos, vivió en la pobreza de los suburbios de Manchester durante toda su niñez. Cuando tenía dieciséis años su familia emigró a Knoxville, en Estados Unidos, donde su situación económica no mejoró demasiado. Al morir también su madre, Frances, con solo dieciocho años, se convirtió en la cabeza de familia y empezó a escribir para ganarse un sueldo. En 1886 publicó Little Lord Fauntleroy, que superó el medio millón de ejemplares vendidos. De regreso a Inglaterra, se estableció en Great Maytham Hall, donde descubrió un jardín secreto de verdad que había estado cerrado durante años y que posteriormente se convirtió en su fuente de inspiración. En 1910 publicó El jardín secreto, su novela más célebre, que ha sido objeto de incontables reediciones y adaptaciones cinematográficas.
