Emily escribía hermosos poemas, que luego de ser descubiertos por su hermana Charlotte, fueron publicados. Tres de las hermanas Brönte, Charlotte, Anne y Emily, se enfrascaron en la tarea de escribir cada una, una novela, de neto corte victoriano. Emily publicó Cumbres Borrascosas; Charlotte, Jane Eyre y Anne, Agnes Grey, en el año 1847.
