Ghosts, thus obtained, became the first objects of belief and worship, and were gradually magnified into gods, of which, in the end, one became supreme; on the other hand, from belief in the survival of the soul grew the notion of immortality. This system he proposes to study from fresh points of view. In the first place, he treats what he calls the X phenomena among savages, clairvoyance, crystalomancy, second-sight, demoniacal possession, and so on, giving examples to show the prevalence of similar experiences; he considers that their apparently supernatural character may have much to do with the theory of a separable soul, and apparently inclines toward a belief in the verity at least of the occurrences. The statements concerning the savage phenomena are not especially full, the account not undertaking to exhibit a complete view of the department. The second part of the treatise undertakes to supply a substitute for the nihilistic doctrine; this is, that the idea of God as, to use the writers words, " a primal eternal being, author of all things, the father and friendof man, the invisible, omniscient guardian of morality, belongs to the lowest savages, who reverence this supreme deity without idol-worship or sacrifice, as immutable, impeccable, all-seeing, benevolent, and lovable.

Heretofore Mr. Lang and his wife have dealt largely with folk-lore and legendary romance; now they find it necessary to turn to reality. If anyone believes that style does not appeal to the young readers, let him open Mr. Andrew Langs "The Animal Story Book" (Jazzybee Publishing), and read to any intelligent child of nine years Dumas description of Mysouf I., Mysouf II., and Pritchard, and note how soon Dumas becomes a living personality to the child. In the perpetual running fight about the Homeric Homer, Mr. Andrew Lang has been for some years a most prominent champion. This work of the well-known historian and man-of-letters, Mr. Andrew Lang, is not a biography at all; it is a controversial pamphlet of large size, the thesis of which is a quotation from The Diurnal under the date of Knoxs death: John Knox, minister, deceased, who had, as was alleged, the most part of the blame of all the sorrows of Scotland since the slaughter of the late Cardinal. From the beginning to the end of his book, Mr. Lang employs all the resources of his literary art, irony, denunciation, special pleading, to discredit the great Reformer. He attributes to him the principles of a Macchiavelli, and a prudence that led him to shun dangers to himself however ready he might be to denounce others who showed like prudence. He accuses Knox of numberless misstatements in his History, extending even to the perversion of the facts of history to justify his acts and those of his party. On nearly every page is a fling at Knox, the following being an example: Knox, as to the doctrine of " killing no murder," was a man of his time. But Knox, in telling the story of a murder which he approves, unhappily displays a glee unbecoming a reformer of the Church of Him who blamed St. Peter for his recourse to the sword. The very essence of Christianity is cast to the winds when Knox utters his laughter over the murders or misfortunes of his opponents, yielding " to the strong propensity which he felt to indulge his vein of humour." Other good men rejoiced in the murder of an enemy, but Knox chuckled. This is not fair play, though it be sharp writing. It is to be admitted that Mr. Lang carries us with him in many of his attacks upon the consistency and spirit of the Reformer, but he himself chuckles overmuch, and allows far too little for the spirit of the time that shapes the character and thought of even its leaders and heroes.

It is hard to tell what the children would do without Mr. Andrew Langs contributions to their entertainment. Much as he writes for their elders, he never forgets the little people, and as regularly as Christmas comes round he sends them a literary gift. The Red True Story Book seems interesting to one of the untutored elders, whose travels no longer take him into fairyland; although there will doubtless be plenty of boys and girls to disagree with such a judgment. To these the realm of Prince Prigio will be far more real than the South Africa of today or the France of the fifteenth century; truth is so much stranger than fiction, and these tales of heroism and self-sacrifice are so much more romantic than any manufactured stories. What could be more splendid, more thrilling, than this story of "Wilsons Last Fight," as told here by Mr. Rider Haggard. The magnificent mettle of these men, and their brave acceptance of their fate, called forth from the Zulu chieftain who slaughtered them the tribute that " they were men who died like men, men whose fathers were men." This human document is followed by Mr. Langs narrative of the Life and Death of Joan the Maid," and the nobility of her disinterested devotion to her country is vividly brought out. Aside from these, the stories for the most part are unfamiliar but eminently worthy of enduring fame. A few tell of heroes whose deeds are mentioned in the histories that children study, but without the detail that makes them picturesque and vivid. For the purpose of bringing these stories to life, Mr. Langs compilation is valuable. Mr. Henry J. The babes of former generations were certainly lucky, for they possessed quite the best book of nursery rhymes which has ever been published. "The Nursery Rhyme Book" by Andrew Lang and illustrated by L. Leslie Brooke is a complete collection of the old nursery rhymes which have delighted so many generations, adorned with attractive pictures and accompanied by a preface written in one of Mr. Langs most engaging moods. The preface, of course, is not for the little ones, but for the mothers, whose duty it is to read the rhymes- and show the pictures. We do not know [says Mr. Lang] what poets wrote the old nursery rhymes, but certainly some of them were written down, or even printed, three hundred years ago. Grandmothers have sung them to their grandchildren, and they again to theirs, for many centuries. We did not know till we studied Mr. Langs table of contents that nursery rhymes may be divided into fourteen different kinds ; but they may, and Mr. Lang gives them all and discourses sweetly on many of them.
