La Guerra de la Independencia llega al avance napoleónico por la península arrinconando a los restos del ejército español, donde lucha el joven Gabriel de Araceli, hasta Andalucía. Los compañeros del joven soldado le relataran el sitio de Gerona y todos ellos seran testigos de excepcion de las Cortes de Cadiz de 1.812.

Galdós fue elegido miembro de la Real Academia Española con notable retraso, bastante después de que su producción literaria hubiera alcanzado las cotas de calidad y cantidad que hacían lógica la elección. Esta tuvo lugar en 1889, fue promovida por quien más tarde le daría la bienvenida en la corporación, su amigo Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, y no estuvo exenta de dificultades, pues requirió dos intentos.
