In popular culture, people have tended to refer to the Creature as "Frankenstein", despite this being the name of the scientist. Cuenta la tradicion que en una velada literaria -entre rayos, truenos, lluvia torrencial y viento huracanado- el poeta romantico Lord Byron, su amante Claire, Polidori y Percy y Mary Shelley se comprometieron a escribir la historia mas terrorifica. Como consecuencia de aquella enfebrecida noche y de la apuesta literaria, Polidori dio a luz El vampiro (origen de Dracula) y Mary Shelley, el Frankenstein. En ambos casos, la posterior influencia de su juego literario habria de engendrar dos subgeneros narrativos que los tiempos posteriores han ido agrandando. En Frankenstein se decantan las posibilidades narrativas que ofrecia la antigua polemica sobre la construccion de automatas, asunto topico entre los cientificos que disputaban sobre las razones eticas del saber. En la novela de Shelley, el doctor Frankenstein termina dominado por su criatura y, con su invencion, da forma literaria a uno de los mitos modernos con mayor raigambre popular.

In the summer of 1816, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin and her lover Percy Bysshe Shelley visited Lord Byron at his villa by Lake Geneva. The eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815 had cast a long volcanic winter, and the weather was not conducive to outdoor pursuits. Instead the companions amused themselves by reading ghost stories, and Byron challenged them to write their own. A terrifying nightmare inspired the eighteen-year-old Mary to write the tale that she would later expand into her classic novel, Frankenstein: or "The Modern Prometheus", a deeply disturbing story of one mans attempt to reanimate the dead, and the deadly consequences of his actions.
