Frank Thomas Bullen nació en Londres en 1857 de origen humilde, y quedó huérfano muy pequeño. A los nueve años, tras la muerte de su tía y tutora, se vio viviendo en la calle, como tantos otros niños de entonces. En 1869 se hizo a la mar y viajó por el mundo primero de grumete y más tarde ascendiendo a segundo y primer oficial. Retirado del mar, fue funcionario de la Oficina Meteorológica de 1883 a 1889. La publicación de La travesía del Cachalote (1898) y numerosos libros posteriores le dio dinero y una gran popularidad. Murió en Madeira el 1 de marzo de 1915.
