Jon Savage nació en 1953. Estudió en Cambridge y ha desarrollado su carrera como escritor especializándose en periodismo musical, del que es uno de los máximos exponentes mundiales. En 1991 publicó England´s Dreaming, título que le valió el reconocimiento internacional y con el que obtuvo el prestigioso premio Ralph Gleason. Asimismo, el libro ha pasado a la historia del periodismo como el título más importante sobre este género musical, y a partir de él se produjo el programa de televisión Punk and The Pistols, emitido en la BBC2 en 1995. Años más tarde vio la luz el documental The Filth And The Fury (2000), también basado en la misma obra. Savage continúa publicando artículos en la revista Mojo y en The Observer Music Monthly; además, es autor de los libros The Kinks: The Official Biography (1984), Picture Post Idols (1992), Time Travel: From the Sex Pistols to Nirvana (1996), Teenage: The Creation of Youth Culture (2007) y 1966: The Year the Decade Exploded (2016) y Una luz abrasadora, el sol y todo lo demás: Joy Division. La historia oral (Reservoir Books, 2020).
