Sinopsis de THE STOLEN LIGHT

"The Stolen Light – When the government taxed the sun and made people sick" investigates one of the most hated taxes in history: The Window Tax (1696–1851). The British government, wanting to tax wealth without invading privacy, decided that the number of windows in a house was a good proxy for income. The result was catastrophic. To save money, landlords across Britain bricked up windows, plunging tenants into darkness and stagnant air.
Historian William Pane details the architectural scars still visible in London today (fake painted windows) and the devastating health consequences. The lack of sunlight and ventilation led to epidemics of typhus, smallpox, and cholera, giving rise to the phrase "Daylight Robbery.""The Stolen Light" is a micro-history of bad policy. It illustrates how a tax designed on a spreadsheet can warp the physical world, destroy public health, and force a population to choose between bankruptcy and darkness.
