Thomas Wolfe
Thomas Clayton Wolfe nació en 1900 en Asheville, Carolina del Norte, y era el menor de ocho hermanos. Su padre regentaba un negocio de lápidas y esculturas funerarias y su madre era hostelera. Wolfe estudió en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte y en Harvard, lo que lo convirtió en el primer miembro de la familia con estudios universitarios. Mientras daba clases en la Universidad de Nueva York, durante las noches escribía y, en 1929, con la inestimable ayuda de su editor, Maxwell Perkins, publicó su primera novela, La mirada del ángel, que obtuvo un éxito inmediato. Ya entonces Sinclair Lewis, en su discurso de aceptación del Premio Nobel de Literatura, mencionó a Thomas Wolfe dando a entender que sería uno de los próximos escritores en recibirlo. En 1935 publicó su segunda novela, Del tiempo y el río y, en 1937, la novela corta El chico perdido. Thomas Wolfe murió un año después de tuberculosis cerebral con treinta y ocho años como uno de los más importantes escritores estadounidenses del siglo xx.
