Nadine Gordimer, séptima mujer de nuestro siglo en ganar el Premio Nobel de Literatura 1991, nació en Sudáfrica en 1923, estudió letras en la Witwatersrand University de Johannesburgo y allá sigue viviendo hasta hoy, entregada exclusivamente a la literatura desde 1953, año en que publicó su primera novela. Recorrió ampliamente su propio continente, Europa y Estados Unidos, donde enseña regularmente largas temporadas en universidades como Harvard y Princeton. Se comprometió firmemente contra el apartheid, aunque, según confiesa ella misma, de haber vivido en otras circunstancias, «la política no habría sido precisamente una de mis actividades favoritas…». De entre sus libros de narrativa destacamos Friday´s Footprint, que ganó el Premio W.H. Smith de Literatura en 1961, Un mundo de extraños que la dio a conocer en el mundo entero, Un invitado de honor, que ganó el Premio James Tait Black Memorial en 1971, La hija de Burguer y El conservador, que obtuvo el Booker Prize en Inglaterra en 1974 y, al año siguiente, el Premio Grand Aigle d´Or en Francia (los tres últimos publicados en la colección Andanzas 62, 38 y 6).
