Charles Cumming nació en Ayr (Escocia) en 1971 y se licenció en literatura inglesa por la Universidad de Edimburgo. En 1995 fue tentado por el Servicio Secreto Británico (MI6) para unirse a sus filas, una experiencia que le sirvió de base para su debut en la ficción con A Spy by Nature.
