The historic maps in this book have been choosen to illustrate our growing understanding of the planet on which we live, from the 15th century, when European seafares first ventured beyond the confines of the known world, to 1914, when scarcely a corner of the globe remained unknown to geographers. Perhaps above all, it is hoped they will allow the reader, as the old Dutch cartographer suggests, to cross rivers and seas without leaving the safety and comfort of home.
