The present translation draws upon nearly half a century of Husserl scholarship as well as the many translations into English of other books by Husserl, occasioned by W.R. Boyce Gibson’s pioneering translation of Ideas, First Book, in 1931. Based on the most recent German edition of the original text published in 1976 by Martinus Nijhoff and edited by Dr. Karl Schuhmann, the present translation offers an entirely new rendering into English of Husserl’s great work, together with a representative selection of Husserl’s own noted and revised parts of his book. Thus the translation makes available, for the first time in English, a significant commentary by Husserl on his own text over a period of about sixteen years.

Edmund Husserl nació en Moravia (actual República Checa) el año 1859, en el seno de una familia judía. Tras asistir en Viena a las clases de Franz Brentano, abandonó el estudio de la matemática e inició su formación filosófica (1884), que amplió con el profesor Carl Stumpf en la universidad de Halle. Más tarde, enseñó en las universidades de Gotinga (1901-1916) y Friburgo (1916-1928). Durante su época de profesor elaboró el método fenomenológico trascendental en obras como «Investigaciones lógicas» (1901), «Lógica formal y lógica trascendental» (1929) y «Meditaciones cartesianas» (1931), que influirán decisivamente en el pensamiento occidental. Con la llegada al poder del partido nazi, fue apartado de la docencia. Una larga enfermedad acabó con su vida en 1938.
