Beginning in Lee s childhood, Grass shows the leadup to World War II from a child s vulnerable perspective, detailing how one person experienced the Japanese occupation and the widespread suffering it entailed for ordinary Korean folk. Keum Suk Gendry-Kim emphasizes Lee s strength in overcoming the many forms of adversity she experienced. Grass is painted in a black ink that flows with lavish details of the beautiful fields and farmland of Korea and uses heavy brushwork on the somber interiors of Lee s memories. Cartoonist Gendry-Kim s interviews with Lee become an integral part of Grass, forming the heart and architecture of this powerful non-fiction graphic novel and offering a holistic view of how Lee s wartime suffering changed her. Grass is a landmark graphic novel that makes personal the desperate cost of war and the importance of peace.

Keum Suk Gendry-Kim nació en Goheung, en la provincia de Jeolla (Corea del Sur). Se licenció en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Sejong, en Seúl, y terminó su formación artística en la École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Estrasburgo. Vivió diecisiete años en Francia y empezó a publicar dibujando sus primeros cómics para el mercado francés, de los que destacamos Le chant de mon père (2012), Jiseul (2015) o L'arbre nu (2020); también ha ilustrado numerosos álbumes infantiles y traducido más de cien libros. Sin embargo, fue Hierba (2017; Reservoir Books, 2022), una novela gráfica publicada originalmente en Corea, la que mayor proyección le dio, con traducciones a más de cuarenta idiomas y premiada con los más prestigiosos galardones internacionales. En concreto, en España ha recibido el Premio Antifaz del Salón del Cómic de Valencia, el Premio Splash del Festival de Sagunt y el Premio del Cómic Aragonés, todos ellos al mejor cómic internacional editado en España. A esta obra le han seguido, hasta la fecha, cuatro libros: La espera (2020; Reservoir Books, 2023), Perros (2022; Reservoir Books, 2024), Mañana será otro día (2023; Reservoir Books, 2024) y Mi amigo Kim Jong-un (2024; Reservoir Books, 2025).
