As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most. To cope, he walks for miles through a nearly deserted city, smelling only his own breath. He vacuums his apartment twice a day, fails to hoard anything, and contemplates how sex workers and acupuncturists might be getting by during quarantine.

David Sedaris es escritor y humorista de loca y muy precisa atención al detalle. Creció junto a su madre, su padre y sus cinco hermanos en la zona suburbana de Raleigh (Carolina del Norte) y ha escrito ensayos autobiográficos contando su vida con ellas y sus posteriores andanzas en Chicago, Londres, Normandía y otros lugares. Ha publicado diez antologías reuniendo sus numerosos textos y un volumen con una selección de páginas de sus diarios de entre 1977 y 2002. Calypso, este libro que tienes ahora entre las manos, es su obra más reciente. En su juventud pasó unas Navidades trabajando disfrazado de elfo de Papá Noel en los grandes almacenes Macy’s de Nueva York y aquello todavía no se le va de la cabeza.
