(Buenos Aires, 1942) es un escritor chileno cuyos libros han sido traducidos a más de cincuenta idiomas. Sus obras teatrales, entre ellas La Muerte y la Doncella y Purgatorio, se han montado en más de cien países. Con su mujer, Angélica, divide su tiempo entre Chile y Durham, Carolina del Norte, donde es Distinguido Profesor Emérito de Literatura en la Universidad de Duke. Entre sus libros destacan las novelas Allegro, Konfidenz y Apariciones, y el poemario Palabras desde el otro lado de la muerte. John Berger dijo sobre su narrativa: «Tenía que suceder algún día: un escritor, una víctima, un revolucionario, que puede ver a dios en el vértigo de la experiencia. Tenía que suceder algún día, pero no necesariamente acompañado de la accesibilidad y grandeza de Dorfman. ¡Gracias a Dios!» Un empecinado defensor de los derechos humanos, colabora regularmente en los diarios y revistas más importantes del mundo.
