Nuruddin Farah nació en 1945 en Baidoa, Somalia, entonces bajo administración italiana. Estudió en Chandigarh, India, así como en las universidades de Londres y Essex, y ha impartido clases en Alemania, Nigeria y Uganda. From a Crooked Rib (1970) ha sido reconocida como la primera novela moderna escrita por un hombre centrada en la opresión de las mujeres. A ella siguieron A Naked Needle (1976) y una serie de trilogías de ficción. Variations on the Theme of an African Dictatorship consta de Sweet and Sour Milk (1979), Sardines (1981) y Close Sesame (1983). A la segunda trilogía pertenecen Maps (1986), Gifts (1992) y Secrets (1998). Con Eslabones comienza su tercera y más ambiciosa trilogía, cuyo segundo título es Nudos (de próxima publicación en Siruela). Yesterday, Tomorrow: Voices from the Somali Diaspora constituye su crónica sobre Somalia. Entre sus muchos galardones figura el Premio Internacional Neustadt, quizá el premio literario internacional más prestigioso después del Nobel.
