This monographic exhibition, the first museum show dedicated to the object in the work of Joan Miró, will consider how Joan Miró represents objects in painting, and how increasingly he brought the object into painting through the use of collage. In many ways this process, by the late 1920s, represented a challenge to painting, what the artist calls “the assassination of painting”. By the 1930s the two-dimensional collage element gave way increasingly to the use of three-dimensional object assemblages which were exhibited in the context of the idea of the surrealist object. These were in a sense three-dimensional collages, and in this period Miró continued with collage and introduced un-orthodox and non-artist materials into both painting and his objects.
