Johann Wyss (1743-1818) era, al igual que el narrador de su novela El Robinson suizo, un pastor suizo padre de cuatro varones. Ideó la historia de una isla con abundantes recursos naturales como medio para entretener e instruir a sus hijos. Uno de ellos, Johann Rudolf (1782-1830), fue un reconocido escritor y poeta, educador y editor, que se dedicó durante años a recopilar y publicar los cuentos tradicionales suizos. En 1812 se encargó de publicar la novela de su padre bajo el título Der Schweizerische Robinson.
