Peter Singer nació en Melbourne (Australia) en 1946, y en la actualidad vive en Nueva York. Tras licenciarse en Filosofía en la Universidad de Melbourne y doctorarse por la de Oxford, comenzó una brillante carrera académica que se ha extendido por tres continentes, en la propia Oxford y en la Universidad de La Sapienza, Roma, en la Universidad de Monash (Australia) y, desde 1999, en la Universidad de Princeton, donde ocupa la cátedra DeCamp de Bioética.
