Geling Yan nació en Shanghái en 1958 en el seno de una familia de artistas y a los trece años entró a formar parte de la Joven Guardia Roja de Mao. Escribió sus primeras novelas en China, y abandonó su país natal después de los sucesos de Tiananmen para instalarse primero en Taiwán y posteriormente en San Francisco. Ha publicado más de veinte títulos, entre los que destacan The Banquet Bug y The Lost Daughter of Happiness. Su obra, traducida a catorce idiomas, ha recibido varios premios literarios y ha sido llevada al cine con gran éxito. Actualmente Geling Yan vive en Berlín y trabaja en el guión cinematográfico de La novena viuda, Premio a la Mejor Novela en lengua china de 2006.
