Craig Russell nació en Fife, Escocia, y ha trabajado como agente de policía, corrector de textos en una agencia de publicidad y director creativo. Es autor de la exitosa serie que protagoniza Jan Fabel, ambientada en Hamburgo y de la que Roca Editorial ha publicado cinco novelas: Muerte en Hamburgo, Cuento de muerte, Resurrección, El señor del Carnaval y La venganza de la valquiria. En 2007, se le concedió el prestigioso premio Polizeistern (Estrella de la policía) que concede la Policía de Hamburgo y ha sido el único autor extranjero en recibir este galardón. El año 2008 ganó el CWA Dagger in the Library por su serie Fabel y, en 2015, el McIlvanney Prize por The Ghosts of Altona. También ha sido finalista, entre otros premios, del CWA Duncan Lawrie Golden Dagger, la más importante distinción del mundo para escritores de serie negra, así como el SNCF Prix Polar en Francia.

Russell es también el autor de la serie negra protagonizada por el detective Lennox. Su obra se ha traducido a veinticinco idiomas y ha sido adaptada a la pantalla en varias ocasiones.
