Tras licenciarse en Veterinaria por la Universidad de Missouri abrió su propia clínica en Sacramento, California, hasta que tras el éxito de sus primeros libros, decidió cerrarla para consagrarse al oficio de escritor, actividad que alterna con sus dos grandes aficiones, el submarinismo y la espeleología.
