Rejecting what the author sees as the false dichotomy of the title, this political and historical analysis traces the roots of political Islam to the Reagan years, when the US supported some insurgency movements in its proxy wars against the Soviet Union. This had the combined effect of strengthening our soon-to-be enemies, and causing greater distrust of the US around the world. The author, a political scientist and anthropologist, advises that, rather than focusing on terrorism alone, America needs a more sophisticated understanding of nationalist movements. Only then, he argues, will its policies and strategies change and its position in the world improve.

Charles Baxter (Minneapolis, 1947) es novelista, poeta y ensayista. Ha sido profesor de escritura creativa en la Universidad de Míchigan, en la Universidad de Minnesota y en el Warren Wilson College. Es autor de seis novelas, seis libros de cuentos, tres poemarios y dos recopilaciones de ensayos. Entre sus obras de ficción destacan las novelas Primera luz (1987); El festín del amor (2000; Libros del Asteroide, 2022), finalista del National Book Award, ganadora del premio Llibreter 2002 y que fue llevada al cine en 2007; Saul y Patsy (2003), El ladrón de almas (2008) y The Sun Collective (2020); y los libros de cuentos Believers (1997) y There’s Something I Want You to Do (2015). Actualmente vive en Minneapolis.
