Gertrude Stein nació en 1874 en Allegheny (Pensilvania). Estudió medicina en la Universidad John Hopkins de Baltimore y fue alumna predilecta de William James. En 1903 se trasladó a París junto con su hermano Leo, coleccionista de arte, y su casa de la Rue de Fleurus no tardó en convertirse en centro de reunión de los incipientes movimientos de vanguardia. Ella misma quiso llevar a la literatura los principios del cubismo, del que era una gran admiradora. Sus primeras obras, como Tres vidas (1909), bebían aún de fuentes más o menos tradicionales, pero con la monumental Ser norteamericanos (1925) se colocó definitivamente en primera línea de la literatura experimental. Con Autobiografía de Alice B. Toklas (1933) y Autobiografía de todo el mundo (1937) revolucionó el género memorialístico. Murió en París en 1946.
